Mutants were the result of human experimentation by the School, Itex, and other related organizations. Most mutants and robots were defined into generations labeled by number or letter.

The Flock initially believed that they were grown in test tubes, but later learned that they had parents. Many mutants were created when the School kidnapped infants, children or teenagers. The School also created clones.

Hybrids[]

Hybrids or recombinant-DNA life-forms were some of the earliest created mutants. In The Angel Experiment, Max stated that the Flock and the Erasers were the only two kinds of hybrids that were successful, and also the oldest.

They are mostly one type of creature (human, feline, etc.), but with the DNA from another species spliced into their genes. Most of those seen were human-animal hybrids, but there were some animal-animal hybrids. Generation 54, the generation including the Flock, consisted mainly of hybrids.

It was possible for some to develop self-mutations, seen in The Final Warning.

Although hybrids were the earliest focus of experiments, Itex later considered many of them obsolete, and moved on to creating enhanced humans of different types. Some of these experiments were created with built-in expiration dates.

Human-animal Hybrids[]

Animal-animal Hybrids[]

  • The "rabbit-dog combo" (mentioned in The Angel Experiment)
  • The "sheep-macaque monkey splice" (The Angel Experiment)
  • The "mouse-cat experiment" (The Angel Experiment; ""a huge, hostile mouse with great balance and an inability to digest either grain or meat. So it starved to death.")

Enhanced Humans[]

Experiments eventually moved away from recombinant-DNA life forms and towards enhanced beings with a normal human appearance. Gen77 consisted mostly of this type of mutant.

  • Omega: a superhuman boy meant to be the perfect human
  • Ratchet: enhanced senses
  • Kate: super-strength
  • Star: super-speed
