The Itexicon Corporation, also known as Itexicon or simply Itex, was a worldwide business organization that ran the School and oversaw the creation of the Flock. They planned to 'save' the world by killing all imperfect people.

History[]

Itexicon was a powerful corporate business that owned "half the world." They owned almost every company, and had branches in every country in the world. There were four in Germany alone and at least four in the U.S. Their many ways of infiltrating society with business ventures prompted Max to say that "It's like they've been taking over the world without anyone noticing it."

They poured trillions of dollars into developing human experimentation and creating mutants. At their peak, Itexicon had contacts inside governments from all over the world, using their wealth and their revolutionary new weapons and hybrids for political sway.

Maximum Ride was one of the experiments whose creation was overseen by the Director. However, Max was also intended by Jeb to stop the Director and save the world.

In Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, Itexicon planned to launch their By-Half Plan, reduce the world's population and save the planet, leaving themselves in charge. They began to sell or "retire" (kill off) their unsuccessful experiments, in favor of robots and the ideal human beings they had created, such as Omega.

The Flock infiltrated their headquarters in Germany. Itex was thwarted when Angel rallied the mutants to rebel, while Fang's blog drew attention to their activities and led kids worldwide to protest.

The organization was mentioned a few times through the rest of the series. In The Final Warning, Max suspected that "whatever's left of Itex is regrouping and gearing up for the next war." In MAX, Itex is referred to as a "shattered shell," and Mr. Chu supposedly "makes Itex look like Sesame Street."

Groups with similar plots soon sprang up, with similar goals of destroying the world: these included the 99 Percenters, the Doomsday Group and the Apocalypticas. Villains such as the Uber-Director and Mr. Chu attempted to fill the void in power left by Itexicon's fall. There were still scientists like Dr. Hans Gunther-Hagen experimenting on humans and cloning, and Gen77 mutants became more widespread.

Products[]

Itex kept up the facade of a normal business conglomerate with many varied subsidiaries.

  • Food (including soda and baby formula)
  • Clothing (including jeans and diapers)
  • Medicine
  • Real estate
  • Computer technology
  • Manufacturing
  • Book Publishing
  • Test tubes
  • Pill vials
  • Lab equipment
  • Gas stations

Behind the scenes, they experimented on human subjects in brutal procedures. They created mutant hybrids and robots in an attempt to either design an improved human race or create an army for themselves. They also pioneered highly developed weapons.

Locations[]

Itexicon World Headquarters[]

The world headquarters for Itexicon was located in Lendeheim, Germany. There were three other branches also in Germany.

The Lendeheim branch was located in a medieval castle with turrets and narrow windows. It was surrounded by walls with huge gates, floodlights, and an electrified net overhead to keep mutants from escaping by flight. Indoors, the castle was filled with dark, uneven tunnel-like hallways lit only by amber emergency lights. High-ceilinged rooms had been converted into barracks, with gray metal bunks and many huge TV screens for broadcasting the Director's messages. There was also a cafeteria.

The Director's office had fluorescent lighting, a modern wooden desk, and Oriental carpets. It was accessible by a secret door that worked as a pivoting stone slab.

The castle still had functional dungeons where misbehaving experiments were chained to the wall. Loudspeakers hung on the walls played the Director's messages.

Most prisoners were allowed to exercise in a courtyard which Max guessed was originally the castle's stable area. The mutant showcase took place in the castle yard, which was set up with a stage, viewing stands and huge TV screens.

Itexicon's headquarters in Britain were located in Threadgill-on-Thames and were located in a former prison. The rectangular buildings were made of dirty brown brick and surrounded by an electrified chain-link fence at least 12 feet high, topped with razor wire. Inside, Angel sensed whitecoats and "minds without bodies."
