Whitecoats were the mad scientists who ran the School and other related organizations in the Maximum Ride series. "Whitecoat" is a nickname given to them by the Flock, based on the lab coats they wear.

History[]

Before The Angel Experiment[]

At some point, Itex was founded and began spreading across the world, creating many different secret labs under cover of a normal business. Their scientists performed multiple experiments on humans and animals, creating hybrids such as Erasers and the Flock.

Itex workers purchased or kidnapped human children to be their test subjects, sometimes lying to parents to tell them their children were dead, or forging medical paperwork.

In at least one case, whitecoats donated their own DNA to create test subjects. Maximum Ride was conceived by combining genetic material donated by Dr. Valencia Martinez and Jeb Batchelder. She and five other children underwent genetic experimentation by the Whitecoats that rendered them two-percent avian. While imprisoned, they were treated like animals and underwent brutal experiments.

In public, some whitecoats were honored for scientific advancements, such as Roland ter Borcht being honored at a black tie event in Washington. However, controversy also surrounded their work. An Itex employee was found dead on at least one occasion, and in 2002 Roland ter Borcht was found guilty of criminal experimentation on humans and sent to prison.

During the series[]

Whitecoats sent Erasers to pursue the escaped Flock. While kidnapped, Angel was tortured by whitecoats such as Reilly tortured her. Whitecoats were also responsible for reviving Ari Batchelder by fusing some of the bones in his neck. Their leader, The Director, was revealed to be a genetic experiment as well.

Although Itex was taken down in Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports, similar threats continued to appear. Dr. Hans Gunther-Hagen used many of the same approaches and was affiliated with Itex in the past.

Angel was taken by Whitecoats after bombs exploded underground at a Doomsday Group rally in Paris. They began experimenting on her again, temporarily blinding her. Jeb and Dr. Martinez had both rejoined the Whitecoats at this time.

After the Apocalypse, Dr. Gunther-Hagen and Jeb were the last known surviving Whitecoats, and both died in their final battle with the Flock and their allies.
